COVID-19 FAQ 2022 SPRING UPDATE

Will you be able to run summer camp this year?

Yes, we are back to running at full capacity for summer 2022!

What do camp COVID-19 protocols look like?

We do not yet know what Summer 2022 protocols will look like as we ease our way back towards normal operations. we are awaiting the most up to date guidance from the State of Oregon and the American Camp Association before setting policies.

IN THE MEANTIME HERE ARE THE POLICIES FROM SUMMER 2021 THAT MAY STAY IN PLACE:

  1. SCREENING- OUR CAMPERS, STAFF, AND GUESTS ARE ALL SCREENED FOR SYMPTOMS BEFORE ENTRY TO THE CAMP ENVIRONMENT AND THEN RE-SCREENED EACH SUBSEQUENT DAY.

  2. TESTING- ALL UN-VACCINATED CAMPERS NEED TO HAVE A NEGATIVE COVID-19 TEST RESULT WITHIN 72 HOURS PRIOR TO ARRIVAL AT CAMP.

  3. SANITATION- WE HAVE GREATLY INCREASED OUR ALREADY AGGRESSIVE SANITATION SCHEDULE AND HAND-WASHING ENFORCEMENT. WE HAVE ADJUSTED OUR CLEANING POLICIES BASED ON ADVISEMENT CREATED BY THE AMERICAN CAMP ASSOCIATION AND THEIR CONTRACTOR ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & ENGINEERING, INC.

  4. FACE MASKS- NOW THAT OREGON’s MASK MANDATE HAS EXPIRED WE TREAT FACE MASKS AS A PERSONAL CHOICE. WE ENCOURAGE PARENTS TO HAVE UNVACCINATED CAMPERS WEAR MASKS INDOORS.

Will campers be required to wear a mask?

In March, Oregon has again dropped the State Mask Mandate. As long as their is no mask mandate we will not be requiring masks. (fingers crossed this is the last time the mandate returns)

There are a few exceptions to this rule as masks are still required is Medical Facilities (including our nurse’s office).

Will campers be required to take a COVID-19 test?

Last summer, we required all un-vaccinated campers to have a negative COVID-19 test result within 72 hours prior to arrival at camp. It is possible that this requirement may still be in place this summer.

Will campers be required to be vaccinated?

Vaccination is strongly recommended before camp for all eligible age groups, but is not required at this time. As State and ACA guidance are published we reserve the right to change this rule, but will give as much advance notice as possible if we do.

How will Covid-19 affect my camper’s experience?

While camp was slightly different in 2021, most campers were unaffected by the differences after check-in. We anticipate that COVID will intrude even less into the camp experience in 2022. We work hard to keep the majority of COVID related changes "back of house" so our campers are free to have an incredible experience with minimized COVID related limitations.

What happens if a camper gets Covid-19?

All camps are already mandated to have a Communicable Disease Isolation Plan to handle airborne diseases like the Measles, these plans work very well with COVID-19. We reviewed our existing plan and it exceeds the standard that is recommended by the State of Oregon.

Parents of youth campers should also be aware that if we need to quarantine or isolate a camper beyond the end of their session we will be charging parents a daily rate to cover associated costs. We will pass along to cost of hotel, staff, and food directly without a markup so the price will be variable but we anticipate it to be around $300/day.

What happens if my session has to be cancelled due to Covid-19?

We were able to run all of our scheduled programs in 2021 and anticipate 2022 to be no different. However, if the camp is forced to cancel a session that your camper is already registered for, we will be offering a refund or a camp credit of whatever amount has been paid so far to use in the future. The credit will be good for up to 2 years in the future and can be used towards any of our products and programs. If the session must be canceled by the camper our standard cancelation policy applies.

COVID-19 FAQ

Will you be able to run summer camp this year?

Yes!

What do camp COVID-19 protocols look like?

As both regulations and our understanding of the virus are constantly changing we are meeting weekly to amend and update our systems. Currently our protocol is based on taking a multi-faceted approach to both prevent the virus from entering our camp population and to minimize each persons risk of exposure if there is a positive case. Our primary strategies include:

WE ALSO HAVE MULTIPLE SUPERVISED HAND-WASHING CHECKPOINTS ON OUR CAMPUS.

  4. COHORTS- OUR CAMPERS ARE SPLIT INTO GROUPS THAT MINIMIZE THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE EACH CAMPER IS EXPOSED TO THROUGHOUT THEIR TIME AT CAMP.

  5. FACE MASKS- NOW THAT OREGON’s MASK MANDATE HAS EXPIRED WE ONLY REQUIRE MASKS IN FOOD SERVICE AREAS. WE STRONGLY RECCOMEND UNVACCINATED CAMPERS WEAR MASKS INDOORS.

  6. SOCIAL DISTANCING- WE HAVE LIMITED THE CAPACITY OF ATHLETIC AND SOCIAL SPACES ON OUR CAMPUS TO ENSURE THAT SOCIAL DISTANCING IS POSSIBLE THROUGHOUT.

Will campers be required to take a COVID-19 test?

Yes, we will be requiring all un-vaccinated campers to have a negative COVID-19 test result within 72 hours prior to arrival at camp. COVID-19 testing access varies state to state but is available at most national pharmacy chains.

Will campers be required to be vaccinated?

Vaccination is strongly recommended before camp for all eligible age groups, but is not required. Un-vaccinated campers will be required to wear face masks indoors under the current statewide guidance.

How will Covid-19 affect my camper’s experience?

While camp will be slightly different this year than in 2019, we are working hard to keep the majority of COVID related changes "back of house" so our campers are free to have an incredible experience with minimized COVID related limitations.

If the camp is forced to cancel a session that your camper is already registered for, we will be offering a refund or a camp credit of whatever amount has been paid so far to use in the future. The credit will be good for up to 4 years in the future and can be used towards any of our products and programs. If the session must be canceled by the camper our standard cancelation policy applies.

COVID-19 UPDATES MARCH 2021

COVID-CSA_M35_Horizontal.jpg

COVID-19 FAQ

Will you be able to run summer camp this year?

With the accelerated rate of vaccination and students returning to classrooms in Oregon, all signs are pointing toward overnight camps being allowed in Oregon for summer 2021. We were able to operate Day Camps in 2020, are currently operating our Academy. We anticipate that the state will approve us to run Overnight Camp as well based on the success of our current protocols and track record.

  1. Screening- Our campers, staff, and guests are all screened for symptoms before entry to the camp environment and then re-screened each subsequent day.

  2. Sanitation- We have greatly increased our already aggressive sanitation schedule and hand-washing enforcement. We have adjusted our cleaning policies based on advisement created by the American Camp Association and their contractor Environmental Health & Engineering, Inc. We also have multiple supervised hand-washing checkpoints on our campus.

  3. Cohorts- Our campers are split into small groups that minimize the amount of people each camper is exposed to throughout their time at camp.

  4. Face Masks- We currently require facemasks in all shared spaces with the exception of camper bedrooms. (Riders are permitted to drop their masks while outdoors on their bike when extreme social distancing is possible.)

  5. Social Distancing- We have limited the capacity of our campus to ensure that social distancing is possible throughout our campus.

Will campers be required to be vaccinated or take a COVID-19 test?

At this point we do not require testing or vaccination. As tests become more available in Oregon we may institute a testing program. It is unlikely that we will require a vaccination as they are currently not approved for those under the age of 16.

How will Covid-19 affect my campers experience?

As we wait for more information to come out, we are working diligently to prepare campus the best we can. In short, there will be several changes to the daily schedule and activities of camp, but we are doing all we can to maintain an incredible experience.

Camp Does Good things; a Read For Parents.

By Kevin English, Executive Camp Director & Co-Owner.

I didn’t always believe this or was even aware of this but I stumbled upon it after my first summer at Mt. Hood as a 22 year-old counselor. It was a truly selfish pursuit and camp was just a stepping-stone toward achieving my dream. But one sweltering night in July changed my life. . .

By Kevin English

Executive Director & Co-Owner

Camp does good things.  I believe this to my core.  I didn’t always believe this or was even aware of this but I stumbled upon it after my first summer at Mt. Hood as a 22 year-old counselor.

I originally came to Mt. Hood to further my aspirations of becoming a pro snowboarder.  After all, this is THE epic center of action sports every summer.  The thought: meet the right filmers and photographers and become famous.  Travel the world snowboarding on someone else’s dime.  “One summer and I’m out,” was the thought.  It was a truly selfish pursuit and camp was just a stepping-stone toward achieving my dream.

One sweltering July night around 1am, however, my co-counselor and myself started smelling cigarette smoke through our open bedroom window.  After a bit of tip-toeing and sleuthing, we discovered one of our campers (all high school aged in our house), trying to sneak a cigarette.  It’s amazing how dumb they think we older folks are.  Really.

After questioning the camper for a bit, trying to do my best cop impression, we finally broke through our expected roles: a camper doing a bad thing, and me, the counselor “doing my job” by busting him.  It turns out, sneaking a cigarette was not the real issue with this young man.  His family was torn apart.  He was confused, frustrated, and felt abandoned in a sense by both parents.  One parent in New York, the other in Australia, being shipped between the two.

His suffering made me hurt.  I realized that, as a 22 year-old, I was in a unique position to create a safe space for him to talk out his feelings without judgment.  I simply served as a sounding board and expressed genuine care and concern.

This moment at 3am at snowboard camp back in 1999 changed my life.  In the following days, I internalized how special that moment was for that young man and myself.  I often wonder if he remembers that night.  I remember it quite vividly as it led to me becoming a camp professional.  A responsibility I take extremely seriously.

So while your child may want to come to Milepost35 because they love mountain biking, our intent is to provide much deeper and meaningful experiences. By virtue of their age and shared interests, our staff is able to connect and support a young person who may not even realize they need it.  We all need support and love.  That is what we do and we hope to have the opportunity to show your child an incredible, life changing experience this summer or in the near future.

COVID-19 UPDATES

COVID-CSA_M35_Horizontal.jpg

COVID-19 FAQ

What changes are we making to prepare for summer camp?

We are meeting daily to review all of our operational policies and procedures and make adjustments to minimize the risk to the health of our campers and staff. We are fine tuning our camper screening policies to keep those with symptoms away from our campus population. We also have adjusted our cleaning policies based on advisement created by the American Camp Association and their contractor Environmental Health & Engineering, Inc. Finally, we are creating systems and schedule that minimize the number of people each camper comes into contact with in order to limit asymptomatic spread.

How will Covid-19 affect my campers experience?

As we wait for more information to come out, we are working diligently to prepare campus the best we can. In short, there will be several changes to the daily schedule and activities of camp, but we are doing all we can to maintain an incredible experience.

Will there still be off campus bike trips?

We still plan to run off campus bike trips, this is of course depending on conditions in each county in Oregon. Independent from COVID-19, based on camper survey results we will be cutting back from daily trips to offer some new bike experiences on campus a few days per session.

What happens if a camper gets Covid-19?

All camps are already mandated to have a Communicable Disease Isolation Plan to handle airborne diseases like the Measels, these plans work very well with COVID-19. We reviewed our plan and it exceeds the standard that is recomeded by the State of Oregon. The major change we have made is upgrading our capcity of isolation space available.

Is my camper required to wear a face mask?

As of right now we strongly recommend that campers bring and wear face masks.

What happens if my session has to be cancelled due to Covid-19?

If we have to cancel a session that your camper isalready registered for, we will be offering a camp credit of whatever amount has been paid so far to use in the future. The credit will be good for up to 4 years in the future and can be used towards any of our products and programs.

5/15/2020

On Friday, May 15th we received updated guidance on camp operations from Oregon Governor Kate Brown, we will be reviewing the information provided through the weekend and will update the camp community again early next week.

This guidance outlines the rules for operating a day camp for school aged campers this summer, but also briefly states that overnight camps are not permitted to operate at this time. Draft guidance earlier this week included provisions for overnight camps to operate, and the language in Friday’s guidance very clearly states “at this time”. We appreciate your patience while we look to the Governor’s office for clarity on this statement and prepare an update on the status of our overnight camps for release early next week.

We understand that everyone is excited to get back to boarding but this is a very fluid situation with protocol status changing rapidly. We will continue to update this announcement as things develop.

In the meantime, stay safe and keep those fingers crossed🤞🏼

4/21/2020

We continue to plan for camp to start, as scheduled, on June 14, but with renewed levels of health and sanitation policies in place.  Public safety and the safety of our campers and staff is paramount and will be our top priority as we continue into our 31st summer on Mt. Hood.

Over the past month we have been working in partnership with local, state and federal agencies to meet the challenge of the current situation. We are expecting official guidance from the Center for Disease Controls and the American Camp Association in early May. After we have received that guidance we will be able to work with the State of Oregon and Clackamas County to share what our ramp up to summer looks like.

We know It can be difficult to plan ahead in these uncertain times which is why we have decided, from this point forward, to lower our summer camp deposit fee from our standard 25% to 15%.

From our staff to our community around the world, please stay safe and healthy as we head into this summer season! If you have any questions about our health and sanitation protocols or the deposit and cancelation policy please give us a call at (503) 622 3736
